Trouble Picking a Niche? More Ideas…

by Tellman on February 16, 2011

Today’s Dear Tellman question comes from Elena. She’s having trouble picking a niche
, and wonders:
“What if people don’t come to me for advice about anything? I’m stumped for the answer. Is there another way to pick a niche?”

Yes, but you probably just need to think a little more outside the box. There has got to be something that people talk to you about that you know a lot about.

Do you read a lot of fiction books? Do you read the newspaper on a regular basis? Do you know a lot about coffee? Are you really good at making macaroni and cheese? I don’t know what the answer is, but there’s something that you have been doing for years that YOU don’t value because you’re so good at it that you take it for granted. However, it is valuable information for someone who doesn’t know as much about it as you do.

So, your challenge is to figure out: what is that “thing”? The thing that you have practiced so much in your life that you can do it without thinking. Maybe it’s how to vacuum your apartment in 30 seconds or less. I don’t know what the topic is but if you search you can figure it out. Think about jobs you have had over the years. What skills did you gain there? There are all sorts of ways to think about this, just try approaching it from a bunch of different angles and see what comes to mind. This exercise should give you some more ideas for picking a niche for your online business.

Here’s another powerful concept that we teach in our 13th Module / Perpetual Marketing Machine course (http://perpetualmarketingmachine.com).

Take a topic you are very interested in, but you are not in a position where you can call yourself an expert on that topic. But, you definitely like talking about it, thinking about it, etc, on a regular basis. Find an expert on your topic, and interview them. Interview all the experts you can. Then, you can create a product of the interviews. Say you are interested in playing the banjo. Find the 10 best banjo teachers in the USA and interview them. That way, you can focus on picking a niche about something you are interested in without having to be an expert about it already.

Listbuilding Tips: Co-Reg or Co-Registration

by Tellman on February 10, 2011

Today’s question comes from Heather. She says:
I just started using co-reg leads. I’m really new at to email marketing and could use any suggestions you have. What autoresponder service can I use with co-reg? Aweber won’t accept it.

This is a great question. The reason that many autoresponders won’t accept co-reg leads is that traditionally co-reg is a little more rough around the edges, and it tends to be harder to build relationships with the people on a co-reg list than it is if your list is made up of people who came to your site and opted in.

Does that mean you shouldn’t use co-reg? No! But you’re going to have to be pretty good at marketing in order to monetize these leads.

Aweber won’t allow them because frequently co-reg lead lists have a much higher spam complaint ratio.
For those of you who don’t know what a co-reg lead is, co-reg stands for co-registration. When someone opts in to one list, you may have a list with check boxes there so they can opt in to a bunch of other lists as well. Or those free iPod deals online, where you have to go through and sign up for a bunch of lists in order to get your prize… that’s another co-registration strategy.

As far as autoresponders that you can use with co-reg, iContact may accept that type of leads if your stats and spam complaint thresholds meet certain requirements.
GetResponse.com will be a little more lenient as well.

So try both of those places, and thanks for a great question!
